Nyerere National Park

Formerly part of the vast Selous Game Reserve, is one of the largest and most diverse wildlife areas in Africa. Located in southern Tanzania, it spans an impressive area of 30,893 square kilometers, making it Tanzania’s largest national park. The park was named after Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the founding father of Tanzania, in recognition of his conservation efforts and leadership.

Biodiversity

Nyerere National Park is home to a wide range of ecosystems, including savannahs, wetlands, forests, and riverine landscapes.
The park supports an array of wildlife, including the famous “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros), as well as giraffes, hippos, wild dogs, and an extensive variety of bird species (over 440 species recorded).

Rufiji River

The Rufiji River, one of the largest rivers in East Africa, is a lifeline for the park. It is a vital habitat for hippos and crocodiles and attracts a myriad of other wildlife.
